DTF vs HTV.
Heat transfer vinyl is the cut-and-press classic — fast, cheap, simple. DTF prints any colour at full resolution. Here's where each one wins.
The short answer: HTV wins for one-off names, numbers and single-colour text on a single garment. DTF wins on everything with colour, gradient, photo art, fine detail, or repeat orders. If you're cutting more than two colours into one design — or struggling to weed fine detail — you've outgrown HTV.
01 Head to head
| Feature | DTF | HTV |
|---|---|---|
| Colours | Unlimited — full CMYK + white in one transfer | Solid colours only — one vinyl per colour, layered |
| Gradients / photo | Native — print exactly what's in the file | Impossible — vinyl is opaque solid colour only |
| Fine detail | Down to 0.8 mm lines and detail | Limited — fine details fail at the weeding stage |
| Hand-feel | Soft, flexible, slight raised feel | Plasticky, stiffer, especially multi-layer |
| Multi-colour cost | Same price regardless of colours | Each colour = a separate vinyl + weed + press |
| Equipment needed | Heat press only (or order printed merch, pressed by us) | Plotter cutter + press + vinyl stock + weeding tools |
| Best for | Full colour, photo art, repeat orders, mixed fabrics | Names, numbers, simple 1–2 colour logos, one-offs |
02 The weeding tax
HTV's hidden cost isn't the vinyl — it's weeding. After cutting, every piece of negative-space vinyl (inside letters, around shapes, between details) has to be picked off by hand. The more detail, the longer it takes.
Comparing something else? On dark cotton the real question is pretreatment, which is covered in DTF against DTG on dark garments. Past a few hundred pieces, screen printing’s per-unit economics start to win. If the process itself is new to you, what DTF is and how the film is pressed is the place to start.
| Design type | Weed / shirt | Per 20-shirt batch | DTF time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple block text | 1–2 min | 20–40 min | 0 — no weeding |
| Logo, thin strokes | 5–8 min | 1.5–2.5 hrs | 0 |
| Script / cursive | 10–15 min | 3–5 hrs | 0 |
| 3-colour layered | 20+ min + layering | 7+ hrs + alignment | 0 — single transfer |
| Photo / gradient | Not possible | — | Native |
Run a script-font side-hustle on Etsy and you're effectively earning $5–$8 per hour after weeding. DTF removes that cost line entirely — print, peel once, press, done.
